Depart from the city of Medan, Indonesia in the hot summer 36-37 degrees Celsius, after 4 hours of mountain bumpy road, surrounded by green tropical forests, stepped off the car, a sense of coolness then rushed to me, as if I had just come from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat.

Finally, I could come to Toba Lake, an invaluable natural treasure of Indonesia, one of the must-see tourist destinations of this country.

Located in northern Sumatra province, 176 km from Medan, Toba Lake is a volcanic crater filled with water, “a jade in the heart of the volcano,” formed after a devastating eruption from 30,000 – 75,000 years.

With an area of over 1,145 square kilometers, 450 meters deep, Toba Lake is actually like an ocean – this is Indonesia’s largest lake, also the largest volcanic lake in the world. Located at an altitude of 905 meters above sea level, surrounded by mountains, Toba Lake is cool all year round.

Toba is a place to relax and enjoy the beautiful pristine landscape. When you look at picturesque mountains with lush lakes, you will feel all the troubles dissolve. Toba’s highlight is environmental preservation. At a resort we visit, people grow from vegetables, fruits to tea, organic coffee, no chemicals, to provide the resort itself as well as guests needs.

The day we arrived in Toba, it was so misty that we could not admire the greatness of the lake. In return, the feeling of floating, blurring like midnight clouds. One person living here showed us where we could watch the most beautiful sun, it is on One Tree Hill. I’m going to date myself to come back on a beautiful sunny day, to live in that wonderful moment.

The short visit time did not give us the opportunity to visit the island of Samosir right in the lake. Heard that on the island there are Batak villages of ancient origin with ancient wooden houses, both simple and lovely, especially the roof has two curved heads like a boat and looming behind trees, corn fields and peppers fields.

Back in Medan, we visited Maimun Palace (or Maimoon Palace, also known as Indonesia Istana Maimun) – one of the famous historical buildings in Indonesia. The palace was designed by an Italian architect in the period 1888 – 1891 with an area of about 2,772 m² and includes 30 rooms, but only a part of the building is open to visitors. The palace attracts visitors from all over not only because of its historicity, but also because of its unique interiors combined with the many styles of Malay, Spanish, Indian and Italian.
